5 YouTube Maxims to get, and stay, viral January 11, 2012

A short time ago, YouTube urged us to  ‘Broadcast Yourself’. They don’t have to tell us any more.  Consider that  3 Billion videos are viewed every day*. With all that content being uploaded and viewed, our video habits on YouTube provide interesting ways to get visbile. More importantly, it also defines how to stay visible. I recently read an article that indicates we are at a transitional time for broadcast media. Part of that change, some argue, is that YouTube has become  online-studio system.

The five (5) maxims are :

  1. Rule # 1 – Make a lot of content. A lot
  2. Rule #2 – Target a niche
  3. Rule #3 – Connect with your fans.
  4. Rule #4 – Collaborate
  5. Rule #5 – Optimize for the algorithms

An example – Since 2007, over 75M+ have watched the Chocolate Rain video by Tay Zonday. He now has his own money-making YouTube Channel.

Ramblings on 2012 trends December 13, 2011

Among the many trends expected for 2012, I think video consumption will see the biggest change. I base this in part from my own biased observations, anecdotes with my friends and from the video highlights of Mashable’s  recent media summit in November.  The link includes a video where each of these topics are discussed. Here is a summary of the 2012 prognostications as described by Mashable’s own Pete Cashmore.

  1. The interface evolution from CUI to GUI will continue to evolve with Touch. Apple devices started this awhile ago with gestures and magic mouse. Now, Smartphones, tablets and even some basic phones include touch screens. Expect to see new screens and new devices use touch technology.
  2. More choices for Aggregation services. Managing the data stream coming at you from news, weather, sports – whatever the topic of interest, expect to see more apps. Examples include flipboard, pulse and livestand.
  3. Life after the iPad – advances in ereaders and other tablet competitors will drive the market. Expect to deals on these devices along with feature, function improvements and price point changes.
  4. Social gestures – do you share everything? Do you want to? Privacy issues will push what is our commonly accepted practice to share & manage information.
  5. TV Everywhere (my pick for biggest impact). Video consumption from any device will continue. On demand – what we want, when we want and where we want it. Cable companies will continue to explore ways to grab and maintain market share by enabling devices beyond the TV (iPad, smartphone).
  6. The 2nd Screen experience – interactive TV let viewers engage with the shows they are watching. Think polls, audience feedback in real time, viewers multi-tasking, enriching the video experience via Social Media apps.
  7. Speaking of which – more TV & Movie marketing apps. This could lead to a new distribution channel for trailers and teasers.
  8. Social Music – more apps like Rdo, Mog and Spotify. These apps and others will integrate the social gestures mentioned above.

Best of the rest includes advances with HTML5, flexible displays, iTV (that video impact again) and several option in push-based media. Among them location based news and media using near field communications (NFC).

Looks like 2012 will be an interesting year. Video consumption will not only impact cable companies but also content producers. TV shows will fragment into smaller digestible chunks on any device capable of streaming video. Cable companies will need to be able to provide bandwidth on demand. I also hope that we consumers will push for flat-fee services, not usage based.

Flexible display may be a way off for the main consumer but might be one of the hot products at CES this year. Remember, you heard it hear first.

Integrated Social Media – Life without Words June 3, 2009

Much of the Social Media world seems to focus currently on communicating via words. In our digital information age, I find it interesting that video and audio is not as common (yet) in the SM community. It’s not that integrated with audio and video. I know that will change.  

Of course, digital video and audio content is easy to generate and share. That’s not my point. With words, we have a robust tool set developed over time to manipulate and manage text. Makes sense since we have been using text and publishing words for, like, a long time now. Think Gutenberg press. Lots of advancements since those days. We have adopted the written word into our behavior, cultural norms and so on. Words and the print world are internalized within us.

Fast forward to the interweb. Again, lots of resource like SEO with meta and key words to aid in text searches. Great tools – for text. Not so much for video. Seen any good search tools for video lately? If you wanted to search for a specific scene, how would you describe it visually? Looking for a particular event or person in video? Today, you use words. At times, not very effective since you have to still visually insepct the images.

Looking down the road, I believe we will develop the visual and audio toolbox equivalents we have for text. As we have only used video and audio for a relatively short time, advancements may take some time. But, I have no doubt it will happen. Imagine being able to edit videos as easily as you can with text files. Same for audio – seamlessly replace/insert/modify music sequences. New applications will provide the ‘Search and replace’ ability for both video and audio. The technology changes that result in easy to sue tools to manage video and audio is on its way. It will change our thinking and our language in ways we aren’t aware of yet. Think how SMS and the realted acronyms has changed our verbal and written communication styles. The same will happen for video. Perhaps, the change will occur first with audio. Much easier to deal with technically (today). The innovations needed will come from the web community. New businesses will start to offer products and services to enhance our communications both with auditory and the visual.

June 4 update – Just saw this on the WP site (honest!) and wanted to share re: videopress. Will have to read (watch?)  this.


Some would point to Photoshop. Great tool – can do lots of things. But, complicated. I have heard people say “been using it for years; only know it a little” or “I only use what I know how to do”.  A steep learning curve there. If you had to take a class to use a pencil, would you think the barrier is to high to use it?

 BTW, ditto for still images. Some basic tools are there and there are getitng better. It’s a long way to go to match what we have for the printed word. 

Life is lived in technicolor and  Coldplay says ‘…I can feel the wave coming.’ I feel it. Can you envision communicating without words? Send me your visual  response – I’d be happy to see it.
